The Lab Program

VPL studio

The Lab Program is at the heart of VPL's mission to support the creation and development of new work of contemporary dance and music. Each year VPL selects a few artists to participate in the Lab Program.  The Lab Program is a creative residency where choreographers and musicians have access to studio space in a small rural Vermont community. In this retreat-like setting artists can concentrate on research and experimentation and test performance ideas to small audiences through open rehearsals or work-in-progress showings.

Projects are artist driven and can range from a 10 day creative residency to a project that develops over the course of 12 months and culminates in a public performance. Often artists are also provided with housing, stipends and photo and video which they can use for the promotion of their projects.

As part of every residency VPL fosters communication between artists and the local community through open rehearsals, artist talks workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and performances. VPL often partners with local organizations to host such residencies and create meaningful connections between artists and communities.

Presently, VPL does not have a formal applications for the Lab Program, but interested artists can contact us regarding a project in development
